Based in Monterey California, Language Line Services began in 1982 as a volunteer organization when a San Jose, California policeman and a Defense Language Institute instructor began providing interpretation for the growing immigrant population in the Santa Clara County area. The service was incorporated in 1984 and named Communications and Language Line (CALL). In 1989, the company was purchased by AT&T and renamed AT&T Language LineĀ® Services. It was acquired in 1999 by Providence Equity Partners, Inc., and is now known as Language Line Services. Language Line Services remains the leader in providing over-the-phone interpretation and document translation services in more than 140 languages. Interpreters stand ready 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days per year. In 2000 the company helped more than 12 million people communicate across linguistic and cultural barriers.
